biography

Giulia Macario is drawn to pictures that have a soul – like someone breathed life into them and left behind only the traces. A Melbourne based image-maker, she uses photography to capture the details and characters on the street and hidden in the shadows.

With a background in Graphic Design, she can often be found chasing light, lines, forms, shapes, textures and typography; always looking for the beauty in the every day – the discarded, the abandoned, and the calligraphic. Her work is often abstract, sometimes dark, and focuses primarily on black and white imagery, though her signature splash of red is smeared across the lens of many of her photos like ink drops of emotion.

In her stories she likes to play with perceptions, adores ambiguity, and engaging the viewer – often leaving them with more questions than answers.
